What is refractive surgery?
Refractive surgery encompasses techniques used to correct vision problems such as myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, and, in some cases, presbyopia. The goal is to eliminate the need to wear glasses and contact lenses.
There are two main techniques in this field: treatment with laser and treatment with intraocular implants.
Adapted and Specialized Techniques
The ophthalmic surgeons at our Neovision Clinic, who specialize in refractive surgery, perform various procedures depending on the patient’s clinical presentation.
To date, there are two main techniques for refractive surgery: laser refractive surgery (SMILE, LASIK, PRK, PresbyLASIK) and refractive surgery using implants (ICL and PRELEX). For each of these approaches, our team of ophthalmologists is highly trained and will guide you in choosing the most appropriate refractive surgery technique.

Essential information
Refractive surgery : what are the defects of vision ?
Refractive surgery involves correcting ametropia, which refers to visual defects resulting from the improper refraction of light rays in the eye. There are three types:
- myopia (impaired distance vision); ;
- astigmatism (distorted vision at both near and far distances); ;
- hyperopia (various conditions that can affect both near and distance vision).
A fourth condition, presbyopia, develops as the lens of the eye ages over time. This condition results in increasingly blurry near vision starting at age 40.
Refractive surgery is an effective solution for avoiding the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. Depending on your specific condition and its severity, your eye care professional will recommend the best technique for refractive surgery.
Please note, however, that this is not a miracle solution; you may be advised to use a backup pair of glasses depending on your daily activities and expectations, and in some cases, your vision may deteriorate again over the years.
What is the best refractive surgery ?
Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages : only an experienced ophthalmologist specializing in refractive surgery can provide you with the most suitable in your case. However, we can summarize the characteristics of the various methods employed by professionals in Ophta Health :
- LASIK: This highly reliable, fast, and precise technique can correct vision problems related to nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness.
- Smile: offers unmatched precision, minimal postoperative complications, and excellent long-term stability. This procedure is suitable for cases of myopia and astigmatism but can only be performed once (no touch-ups are possible).
- PKR and TransPKR: recommended for mild myopia, astigmatism, or hyperopia, these procedures are often painful during the postoperative period.
- Presbylasik: Designed to correct presbyopia, this technology aims to achieve a satisfactory balance between near and distance vision.
- Ocular Implants: This alternative is recommended for patients who are not suitable candidates for the previous techniques (severe ametropia and/or corneas that are too thin).
