Did you know there is an alternative to wearing glasses or contact lenses? To correct common vision defects, laser treatment is increasingly favored. Our specialized clinic in laser refractive surgery in Lyon explains this technique as well as implant surgery, which represents another effective solution.
Laser refractive surgery VS implant surgery
Whether you suffer from myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, or presbyopia, refractive surgery is an effective and long-lasting solution. For millions of patients struggling to see clearly at a distance or up close but reluctant to wear glasses or lenses, this minor procedure allows them to regain true comfort in life.
Laser surgery is generally offered as a first option for patients under 60 years old. Minimally invasive, it enables lasting visual acuity, even though it may gradually decline again over time.
For people over 60 or those with contraindications to laser use, implant surgery may be considered.
Phakic or pseudo-phakic implant surgery
More invasive than laser refractive surgery, implant surgery involves placing a type of “integrated contact lens” between the iris and the natural lens. Two techniques are used.
Phakic implants are used for patients with severe myopia or hyperopia for whom laser is contraindicated. Reasons may include a cornea that is too thin, dry eye syndrome, or an autoimmune disease, for example. This technology is also suitable for people who cannot tolerate contact lenses.
Pseudo-phakic implant surgery is offered to patients aged 55 to 60 and over who have difficulty with near or distance vision. The procedure is similar to that used for cataracts but aims solely at refractive correction.
